Ingredients
- Top up withGinger aleChill it beforehand so the ice melts more slowly and the drink stays fizzy.
- ½ ozGrenadineA syrup traditionally made from pomegranate; it gives the drink its color and sweetness.
Ice: Ice cubes · Garnish: cocktail cherry
Method
- Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.
- Pour in 120 ml of ginger ale.
- Slowly add 15 ml of grenadine; it sinks to the bottom and forms a red gradient.
- Stir once, gently, to keep the bubbles, then garnish with a cocktail cherry.
Tips
- Pour the grenadine last and slowly so it settles at the bottom and creates the layered look.
- Many bars use lemon-lime soda instead of ginger ale. Use the same 120 ml for a lighter, less spicy drink.
- Check the grenadine label: a pomegranate-based one gives a more tart, fruity flavor than a simple red syrup.
History
The Shirley Temple is named after the American film actress Shirley Temple. Several Hollywood venues claim to have invented it, but its exact origin is uncertain. It is traditionally made with ginger ale and grenadine and has become a classic alcohol-free drink.
