about 1 standard drink (US, 14 g of alcohol). Estimated after dilution with ice.
Ingredients
- 1½ ozWhite rum
- 1 ozFresh lime juiceSqueezed just before blending for the freshest flavor.
- ½ ozSimple syrupEqual parts sugar and water, cooled.
- 5StrawberryRipe and hulled. Set one aside for the garnish.
Ice: Crushed ice · Garnish: strawberry
Method
- Chill a coupe glass in the freezer, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink.
- Hull the strawberries and set one aside for the garnish. Put the other four in a blender.
- Add 45 ml white rum, 30 ml fresh lime juice and 15 ml simple syrup, then about 1 cup (150 g) of crushed ice.
- Blend until smooth and thick, with no ice chunks left.
- Empty the ice water from the glass and pour in the drink. Garnish with the reserved strawberry on the rim.
Tips
- Use ripe, sweet strawberries. If they are tart, add a little more simple syrup, 5 ml at a time, and taste.
- Frozen strawberries work well: use four frozen strawberries in place of the four fresh ones in the blender, then reduce the crushed ice as needed until the drink is thick.
- The classic Daiquiri contains no strawberries or other added fruit beyond lime juice. It is shaken with rum, lime juice and syrup, and served without ice.

History
The Daiquiri is often credited to Jennings Cox, an American engineer working near Daiquirí, Cuba, around 1900, though its origin is debated. The frozen style is associated with El Floridita, a Havana bar where Constantino Ribalaigua is credited with popularizing blended versions in the 1930s. The strawberry version is a fruit variation of that frozen style; its exact origin is not well documented.
